ONE DAY COURSE 10:00AM – 4:30PM
If you want to take better, more creative pictures of these most noble creatures and their relationships with people then the Horses and People Photography Course is the course for you.
We are so used to seeing the result of trust, loyalty and respect beautifully communicated in the dressage arena or fearlessly flying over fences on a cross-country course; there is more interest and insight in the quieter moments. These moments are the special times which, to me epitomize the very essence of the strong bond between horse and human. Whether it’s the day to day interaction in the field or stable, a chat over the fence or just being together, these are the little glimpses into a relationship that can be captured on camera.
Come on the Horses and People Photography Course and enjoy an equine shoot with top event horses and their handlers. Be inspired to take your new knowledge away and create some great images.
To get the most out of the Horses and People Photography Course, it is recommended that students are able to control depth of field, capture motion and have an understanding of how to use ISO. These skills are taught on our Beginners Digital Photography Course.
The People & Horses Photography Course will be delivered as a morning classroom/workshop session followed, after lunch, by a photo-shoot with two or three selected horses at Reybridge Eventing – stables of International Eventing Rider David Doel and trainer Maggie Doel.
The horses will be accompanied by staff members from Reybridge Eventing and the photoshoot will be directed by the tutor Kate Lloyd. On retuning to Lacock Photography, there will be opportunity to review student images and to discuss the practical application of the techniques taught.
The Equine Photography Course will cover the following subjects:
• Equine photography requirements
• People and their horses
– Clothes & colours
– Portraiture concepts
• Horse and owner portrait shoot
• Image downloading, share, review, feedback and Q&A
Be the first to review this course.

Kate trained as a doctor and spent years in a variety of medical roles, which she thoroughly enjoyed. However the creative part of her brain was finally able to rule when she found a moment to change career completely and become a professional photographer.
In 2004 Kate began taking portraits of people who interested her, and building on that expanded the menu of subjects gradually to people of all ages. Initially, to differentiate herself from the amateur photographer she had been, she aimed to achieve entry level qualifications in photography, LRPS, LSWPP and LBIPP through the various professional bodies.
A telephone call in 2013 made the difference when a woman called asking for photographs of her horse before it had to be put down. The mare was very old and had been the love of Melanie’s life. She was in tears on the phone and begged for a photo shoot to record her beautiful mare before the vet took her away.
The photo shoot duly took place and Kate had a sudden ‘light bulb moment’. Having always loved horses it wasn’t clear why the combination of horses and photography hadn’t occurred to her earlier. So in 2014 she fulfilled a lifelong ambition to visit the Camargue and see the white horses. And so it began…
An absolutely emotional journey has started, with trips to different locations round the world to photograph a variety of horses.
Camargues in the South of France, Mustangs in California, Lusitanos in Portugal and Friesians in Holland have just been the start of the unexpected fulfilment of a childhood dream.
She will use examples from her own portfolio of horse images from these visits during the workshop.
In 2016 Kate achieved an award of Associateship of the British Institute of Professional Photography (ABIPP). Kate’s passion for horses allows her to convey the enthusiasm for equine photography in a very personal and practical manner. She will share all her mistakes and successes, including the vital elements of equipment for a photo shoot with a horse, with or without their owner.
