ONE DAY COURSE            10:00AM – 4:30PM

Street Photography is about capturing everyday life in public spaces, and elevating fleeting moments into something special through photography. If you’re interested in producing authentic, spontaneous and striking images of real life, and real people (whether that be on an exotic holiday, a weekend away, an event or even at every day hangouts), then this is the course for you.

The workshop’s tutor, James McCormick, will build your confidence, improve your technique and encourage your creativity; everything you need to capture a really powerful image. The course will also inspire you to photograph people from all walks of life, and to not be afraid to move in close.  Documenting people and places is undoubtedly one of the most stimulating areas of photography, and this workshop provides the perfect springboard to explore your interest and talent.

All our courses are run in our own purpose built training studio. After the photoshoot in Lacock village, you will return to ‘The Old Clubhouse’ to review your images. We limit the course to a maximum of 6 students to enable James to help everyone individually.

To get the most out of the Street Photography Course, it is recommended that students are able to control depth of field, capture motion and have an understanding of the ISO setting. These skills are taught on our Beginners Digital Photography Course.

● Identify when additional lighting is required and how to use it to maximum effect.
● When to use props and backgrounds.

We will also cover;
●  The psychology of engaging people so that the creation of stunning images is mutually beneficial to both photographer and subject
●  When and how to approach people / etiquette and politics.
●  Why are we taking these photographs /idea generation/what do we want to achieve with our images and why this is so important.
● What equipment should we use and all the pros and cons that go with this.· The qualities of, and how best to use, various types of light including best times of day and how this effects our subjects
●  How to use camera aperture and speed and how this can dramatically change the personality of the image.
●  Photographing people from different angles and how this changes the personality of our subject.
●  How to maximise the equipment you have and or what to invest in.
●  Using the environment and props as well as cropping techniques to tell stories.

Street Photography Course rated overall 4.9 out of 5.0

★★★★★  F.A.  James is an inspirational tutor who has a fantastic background for the Street Photography Course.  I can’t imagine there is much like this elsewhere!  I now feel brave enough to go out and take some decent pictures of folk in the street!
★★★★★ A.J.   The small group format on the Street Photography Course and hands on approach by James was very positive. His technical knowledge and personal experiences came through in a non elitist manner making you feel your comments and contributions were valued.
★★★★★  C.D. Excellent value for money, professional and knowledgeable lecturer, nice pace and good content and the hospitality offered by Andy and Fiona was exceptional. I will use Lacock Photography again.
★★★★★ J.W. Excellent tutor and a really really enjoyable day!
★★★★★ P.T James gave a very useful talk on the Street Photography Course, full of tips, prior to encouraging us to take images of each other both inside and outside the Old Clubhouse. THE TUTOR - James McCormick

James’s career started back in the days of film and darkrooms when he worked as an assistant and black and white printer to Clive Barda, the world’s leading photographer in the field of Classical music and Opera. From there, wanderlust set in and James decided to follow his passion for travel and reportage photography. He spent 2 years working in Africa as a photojournalist, specialising in West African politics.

Upon returning to the UK, James returned to photographing performing artists except this time it was popular culture.  At this time, James photographed just about everybody in the industry including the Spice Girls for whom he was their exclusive photographer.

For the last twelve years, James has combined all the various skills and techniques he has developed over the years and is now one of Britain’s leading commercial advertising photographers working for a whole host of Corporate companies including Microsoft, Panasonic and many others.

For James, photography is about the subject and how the subject relates to the photographer and or viewer of the image.  It is about psychology, its about engagement, it is about so many differing things but most of all it’s about a moment in time that tells a story forever.
A selection of James’s work can be found on his website:
