Who is this Food Photography workshop for?

Foodies! Anyone that loves food, loves to make food, loves to talk about food! Food photography is uniquely challenging, it demands the perfect balance of artistic AND technical skills.

This one day Food Photography workshop will cover everything you need to get you started. The food photography workshop is ‘hands on’ and is for anyone that wants to learn how to take better photos of their food at home or at work. Students will be working with simple ingredients, props and working their way through the day shooting, setting the scene and learning as we go.

This Food Photography workshop will cover simple food styling and tricks, colour, props, backgrounds , and making the best of the light you have wherever you are! Composition and framing and how to make the most of your ISO, depth of field, shutter speed settings, and simple post production tips in Adobe Lightroom®.

This workshop is ideal for anyone wanting to share amazing food images particularly for food bloggers, businesses and social media communicators.

The workshop is run in our own purpose built training studio, the day starts with a tutorial on the basics of camera settings and moves on to address key elements applicable to food photography.  Topics covered include:

  • Set up/Food Styling
  • Composition ideas
  • Depth of Field
  • Light
  • Perspective
  • Negative Space
  • Finding Your Style

A series of ‘table-top’ set-ups will be developed during the day to build skills in using and controlling natural light and learning how bouncing and filtering light can be used to best effect.  Props, backgrounds and colour tones will be introduced into the set-ups.  Food presentation ‘tricks’ are the final ingredient to go in!

Camera Equipment

  • This workshop is suitable for students with DSLR, system, bridge or mirrorless cameras.
  • There is no specific requirement for lens type, bring whatever lenses you have!

To get the most out of the workshop students should already understand the basics of exposure, shutter speed, aperture and ISO; and be comfortable handling their cameras using aperture/shutter priority or fully manual mode.  We teach these skills on our Beginners Digital Photography Workshop.

The Tutor – Figgy

Figgy’s expertise in Food Photography has been built up over a period of 15 years working with online and high street businesses. Through creative presentation and capture, Figgy has carved out a niche in her photography work that combines her passion for beautiful food with her love of  photography to enable her to earn a living through something she adores.

Using simple setups with the minimum of equipment (no complex flash or fixed lighting setups), Figgy has developed techniques that make the best of the available light to present food in interesting yet realistic ways.  Figgy has a relaxed and informative teaching style.
