Landscapes are perennially popular subjects for photographers. However, capturing a really good landscape image is challenging. Everyone can photograph the landscape … but what makes a striking landscape photograph? How much is down to planning and how much is serendipity? Why and how does a superb photograph stand out from the rest?

In Wiltshire, we are fortunate to have great landscapes right here in our county. There are vistas of rolling downland, sweeping vales swathed in autumn mist and ancient woodlands carpeted with spring flowers. Our evocative ancient monuments are world-famous. Within a day’s drive there is even more variety, such as waterfalls, mountains and coasts. Each type of subject presents its own particular challenges … and opportunities.

To get the most out of the course students should already understand the basics of exposure, shutter speed, aperture and ISO; and be comfortable handling their cameras using aperture/shutter priority or fully manual mode.

Other Information

This Landscape Photography Masterclass is based entirely in our purpose built training facility in Lacock.  Students can either bring their own laptops/computers to use with Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop installed or use one of our own desktop Windows 10 systems.

This course is suitable for students with DSLR cameras, a range of lenses from wide angle to telephoto and sturdy tripods. Processing techniques will be demonstrated using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop so it will be advantageous if you already have these or are looking to acquire them. Basic Adobe Lightroom Classic skills can be acquired on our Adobe Lightroom Workshop if necessary.

Landscape Photography - Masterclass

This two day masterclass covers the techniques and perception required to take your landscape photographs to the next level. Concepts explored in detail throughout the course will be thinking creatively, planning ahead and making the most of opportunities. The course is interactive and your participation with questions, comments and opinions is encouraged.

On the first day we will cover:

  • Weather: Sunshine, cloud, mist, frost, snow and rain all present opportunities and challenges. What subjects work best in what conditions?
  • Seasons: How can we bring seasonal influences to the fore and add that extra ingredient to our pictures?
  • Photographing Water: Whether still or flowing, water is a dynamic element in the landscape. We will discuss the effect of weather, time of day, shutter speed and filters to capture movement and reflections.
  • Photographing the Coast: Our coast is the spectacular wild edge of Britain. How can we optimise the use of light and tides to fulfil the tremendous photographic potential of beaches, cliffs, sea stacks, lighthouses, castles and storms?
  • Photographing Deserts: For photographers able to travel overseas, deserts represent landscapes in the raw. How can we make the most of exquisite light to capture their patterns?
  • Impact and Narrative: Some of the most compelling pictures capture a moment or tell a story.

Landscape Photography - Masterclass

The second day will comprise an image processing workshop. You are encouraged to bring a selection of landscape images (preferably RAW files), either taken on the Landscape Fundamentals Course or elsewhere. The tutor will demonstrate how to get the best out of them using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.  The day will conclude with a presentation on “The Point of Return”, looking at pairs of images of the same scene taken in different lighting and weather conditions to maximise the potential of landscape compositions.

Lunches and refreshments throughout the course are included.

To get the most out of the course students should already understand the fundamentals of exposure, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, composition and using light; and be comfortable handling their cameras using aperture priority and manual mode. Our “Landscape Photography Fundamentals” course is the ideal preparation for this course but all amateur photographers with significant experience of landscape photography are welcome to attend.

This course is suitable for students with DSLR cameras, a range of lenses from wide angle to telephoto and sturdy tripods. Processing techniques will be demonstrated using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop so it will be advantageous if you already have these or are looking to acquire them. To ensure individual attention, the course is limited to six participants.  The course is interactive and your participation with questions, comments and opinions is encouraged.

The Tutor – Robert Harvey

Professional photographer Robert Harvey BA ARPS EFIAP CEnv CSci MCIWEM has created Natural World Photography, dedicated to creative images of landscapes, wildlife and the beauty of the night sky. A Chartered Natural Scientist and Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, Robert leads photography tours throughout Britain as well as overseas. More than 290 of his photographs, including over 100 landscape images, have been accepted in international exhibitions worldwide.

Living near the World Heritage Site of Avebury, some of Robert’s favourite images have been taken in Wiltshire, where our ancient past resonates through the landscape. He is the author of “Photographing Wiltshire”, the only photographic guidebook to the county, published by Fotovue in 2020.

Robert is also inspired by remote locations such as coasts, mountains and deserts, where untamed land is sculpted by natural elements. He has photographed all Britain’s National Parks at their seasonal best, along with coastlines throughout the British Isles from the southern tip of Cornwall to the northernmost point of Shetland. Overseas, his favourite countries for landscape photography are the United States, Namibia and Norway, each of which he has visited several times.
